Adventures in Darjeeling and Sikkim on a Royal Enfield. Starting from the plains in the north eastern India town of Siliguri in West Bengal, this motorcycle tour takes in the eastern Himalayan foothills of Darjeeling (2,800m.) following Darjeeling’s famous Toy Train.

Riding through famous tea gardens – once summer retreats for the British Raj, the ride takes us through the small Hill Station of Kourseong, winding uphill to Darjeeling town. Ahead of us lies Sikkim’s Himalayan kingdom of mystical Buddhist monasteries, high altitude lakes and beautiful Orchid Gardens.

In the hills we get a taste of Lepcha lifestyle, the largest Mongolian community in Sikkim, and the Limbus, a Nepali Kirati tribe. Our journey takes us high into the north of Sikkim from the state capital Gangtok into The Great Himalayan Range in the shadow of Kangchenjunga the world’s 3rd highest mountain.  We visit Rumtek, seat of HH The Karmapa Lama and the pretty hill station of Kalimpong, once the stop-over for the HH The Dalai Lama whilst fleeing Tibet.

Day 1 - Get yourself to Siliguri

. It can be reached by air to Bagdogra (11km from Siliguri) or road or rail to Siliguri. The Tour starts here with a Welcome Dinner and Tour Brief.

Day 2 From the Plains to the Hills

, we ride north to Darjeeling, through tea gardens in the rolling Himalayan Foothills. We stay in Darjeeling town.

Day 3 Tour locally in Darjeeling

tasting Hill Station life. We ride to monasteries, Tea estates and the early birds watch the sunrise from Tiger Hill (2,950m.) over the Darjeeling Hills.

Day 4 The uphill ride to Gangtok

through steep sided green valleys, check-in and tour locally. We take in the Hill Station and its markets, Orchid gardens and a picnic at Thangu Lake.

Day 5 A circular ride to Rumtek Monastery

seat of HH The Karmapa Lama. Then a ride on to Tashi View point and finally the spectacular Ganesh Tok. We stay in Gangtok.

Day 6 We ride north to Singhik

between the holy Kanchenjunga Peak in the Kanchenjunga National Park to the north and west and the Kyongnosla Sanctuary to the east. We stop for refreshment in Lepcha villages, and spy the famous Rangrang Bridge. We stay in Singhik.

Day 7 – 8 Ride further north to Lachung

with its high mountain views. We stay in a Tibetan lodge in Lachung.

Day 9 Further north to Yumtang village

at the end of the road. Where we enjoy for a while the wide open alpine like pastures, before riding back down to Chumgthang and back north west to Lachen.

Day 10 A morning we ride to Thangu

to the northern most roadhead. Then we ride down to Gangtok. Rest the night and enjoy the town’s social life.

Day 11 We head for western Sikkim

and ride first to Gezing. It is a one day ride, through Tea Gardens, Rice Paddies, Cardamom Fields. We stay in Gezing.

Day 12 Visit the Tashiding Monastery

Khechodphelri Lake, Pema Yangtse Monastery. we stay in Gezing.

Day 13 Ride to Revangala

enjoying scenic views, Sikkim’s best Tungba (The Hill People’s rice beer). We stay in Revangla.

Day 14 Back to Siliguru

Farewell Dinner. Depart the next day.
