Zanskar and Kashmir Summer 2007
An inauspicious start to the day for everyone. An inauspicious start to the day for everyone. Convoys snake up the mountain. Buddha sits atop a tiny gumpa
The Saro River in full spate. Night stop Kargil. The road to Sanko got progressively worse. inplaces it becomes a river. Road Break, We carried enough fuel to get us to Padum. The mountains turn red and the green clings precariously to the mountain side.
Small mud brick dwellings perched at rocky outcrops. We were still in the heart of Islam. The road is stoney all the way, broken only by patches of mud and the odd river. 40kms per hour is the best we could manage. A local style wooden tressle bridge over a tributary in the upper reaches of the Saro.
Bruno carried the fuel and I carried the tools and spare parts. The mud loops leading to Rangdum, night stop coming. Penzi La. 14,000ft! The 14km long Dhang-Dhrung Glacier.
