Kathmandu Lhasa by Bullet | Print |

Riding Across the Tibetan Plateau to LhasaThis is a Royal Enfield Overland Tour from Kathmandu to Lhasa, capital of The Autonomous Region of Tibet. The tour departs June or July (the best months) from Kathmandu, returning 16/17 days later.

A round trip ride Kathmandu - Lhasa - Kathmandu, over two weeks of tough-road riding, exploring the Tibetan Plateau, high passes and the turquoise Yomdrok Lake, past monasteries and ancient Dzongs.

Finally arriving in Lhasa with it’s promise of a good rest and a hot shower. Over the next 3 days we visit the imposing Potala Palace and the world famous monasteries of Sera and Jhokhang, experiencing life in and around this ancient capital.

Our return journey heads down a section of the Tibet-Sikkim Highway turning west off the highway to stay in Lharze visiting the Sakya Monastery. The next day we’re aiming for the ancient Silk Road trading post of Tingri.

Road conditions vary from well metalled to dirt roads. From Tingri we have excellent views of Mt. Everest. We spend one day touring up to the Mt. Everest Base Camp before we head back south towards Nepal.

On arriving back in Nepal we stay again at the Last Resort, where for those who seek one last thrill, a Bungy-Jump off the bridge 160m. into the Bhote Kosi Gorge before the ride back to Kathmandu.

Pre – Post Tour

Arrangements can be made for additional days before and after the planned Tour dates including escorted transfer to the scheduled Tour Hotel. Additional transfer and hotel room fees will be charged pro-rata.

Reality Check

Travelling anywhere in Nepal and Tibet requires both mental and physical stamina and patience. This is a moderately tough to tough tour. Sometimes the ride covers long sections of dusty broken roads, with possible highway construction traffic.

Some long riding days. Warm to hot daytime sun, evenings cool to chilly. Many days spent at altitude with the chance of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).

Maps & Navigating Tips

Finding The Map You Need

Finding maps of remote and far away places is a challenge at the best of times. In London I would go to Stanfords. In San Fransisco I would go to Rand McNally's. In Leh Ladkah I would go to the local bookshop in the market square. In Kargil it's the stationery shop, and in Srinagar look in the book shops.

How Big is This Map

A question arose about the scale and distances involved on a particular map we were reading, something like, "How big is this map?" There was no Distance Scale Rule printed on the map, save the chilly numbers 1:250,000. Ok that's 1 bit on the map = 250,000 bits on the ground right? So how far is it between here and there...

Testimonials

Peter, Thanks for your reply. This is what I wanted to hear. I dislike riding in a large group day after day. It would have been a deal breaker. Karst, Colorado, will be riding with us to Zanskar this August.
