Ladakh Zanskar Kashmir Tour Overview

A Royal Enfield Motorcycle Tour of Ladakh, Zanskar and Kashmir riding from the plains to high mountains. For 21 days we explore hidden worlds from Ladakh's high altitude plateau, deep into the hidden Zanskar Valley and ultimately down into Kashmir's silver Vale.

During our motorcycle tour we glimpse the Khampa Nomads on this ancient Silk Road to Tibet. On the Ladakh plateau we find Buddhist Gompas perched on pinnacles and arrive in Leh with its myriad lanes and peaceful oases.

We ride further over Khardung La (5,600m) the world’s highest motorable road and down into Nubra's twin valleys. Returning to Leh the next stage of the tour takes us to Kargil, gateway to the Zanskar Valley. A single track road takes us between vast glaciers, furious rivers and dramatic landscapes to the remote Buddhist town of Padum, where we rest and explore the age old Gumpas clinging precariously above the Zanskar River.

From Kargil the final stage of the tour brings us down into the alpine-like Sind Valley and down to Kashmir’s silver vale. We relax on Srinagar’s peaceful lakes in houseboats, once upon a time the floating summer cottages of British holiday makers, escaping the scorching heat of the plains. From Srinagar the Tour concludes with a spectacular mountain flight back to Delhi.

Itinerary

Ladakh Zanskar Kashmir Tour Itinerary

Day Itinerary Detail
Day 1 We will collect you from the airport and accompany you to our hotel for a wash and brush up and a welcome lunch. In the evening we take the night coach to The Tour Start point in Manali.
Day 2 We arrive at the hill station Manali 2,050m in the morning. It’s a day to familiarise yourselves with the bikes. We’ll deliver a road brief, take a short ride and make your final preparations for the Tour. We stay in Manali.
Day 3 Our first waypoint is Rhotang La 3,980m. It’s a long climb and the road is constantly being repaired and modified. All the way up the scenery changes. Himalayan Eagles sit atop cathedral spires of jagged rock, as our path zig-zags up the mountain. A memorable first day indeed. After the pass, with its makeshift chai shops, muddy horsemen and the occasional yak, an equally long descent into the Lahaul Valley. We cross the Chandra River at Koksar and head for the petrol pump at Tandi, the last fuel before Leh. We all fill-up here and ride the last leg to our night-stop in the quaint village of Keylong.

Reality Check

Ladakh Zanskar Kashmir Tour Reality Check

  • This is a physically demanding Road Tour with some long riding days, in widely varying weather conditions.
  • The ride calls for a high degree of mental and physical stamina, Royal Enfields are heavy - 160+ kg with luggage.
  • We will encounter long sections of broken road on these mountain highways and off-road riding skills will be required.
  • Skill and riding experience are necessary to manoeuvre across rough, muddy and sometimes water-filled sections of roadway.
  • High mountain weather can quickly change from warm sunshine to driving snow.
  • The route to Padum is quite a tough (4 days, possibly 3) ride, down and back, all on an un-metalled road.
  • Riding in India can be dangerous! Over-speeding and careless road positioning can lead to accidents.
  • Typically we can expect warm daytime sun, with cool to chilly evenings, at altitude it can be very cold at night and snow is possible.

  • In Srinagar we stay on old wooden houseboats, where we try to give eyeryone a room to themselves.
  • For those sharing, we put same gender singles together in twin beds or a double and a single according to your choice.
  • Single accommodation (room or tent) is usually arranged before the Tour.
  • Chosing single accommodation en-route will be charged at an additional £30 per night; deducted from the Motorcycle Security deposit.
