Himachal Hill Road Tour

Himachal Uttarakhand Hill Road Tour

First take the train from Delhi to Udampur and join us for the start of a 2 or 3 week Tour eastwards taking in the beautiful himalayan hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand (Uttaranchal).

Part camping, part simple hotels combined with riding scenic bendswinging roads for days-on-end. We take routes north beneath India's highest Himalayan mountain ranges.

We'll ride east through Garhwal and Kumaon (the two regions of Uttarakhand) on north India's least ridden hill roads; dense forests, ancient pilgrim routes, through villages that rarely see tourists, along raging rivers at the foot of India's highest mountains.

The hill roads we ride follow the ancient routes of pilgrims, taken each year to reach the Valley of Flowers and the source of the Ganges.

This is a brilliant hill Road Tour in the true style of FreeSpirit Adventure!

Reality Check

Toughness / Climate Rating - Starting in the south of J&K this rewarding and exhilarating tour kicks-off direction Dalhousie. Towards Dalhousie and beyond is a joy! The rewards of such amazing views en-route down into the Kangra Valley make it well worth the ride. The hill roads of HP. and Utt. are not (yet) congested.

Most of Uttaranchal is largely under-developed as regards 'comfortable tourism', the accommodation can be 'interesting' - clean and basic, might best describe it.

Domestic transfers include the train from Delhi to Udampur (the end of the line) and at the end a comfortable overnight sleeper-train from the railhead near Nainital to Delhi.

Warm daytime sun, evenings cool.

Finding The Map You Need

Finding maps of remote and far away places is a challenge at the best of times. In London I would go to Stanfords. In San Fransisco I would go to Rand McNally's. In Leh Ladkah I would go to the local bookshop in the market square. In Kargil it's the stationery shop, and in Srinagar look in the book shops.

How Big is This Map

A question arose about the scale and distances involved on a particular map we were reading, something like, "How big is this map?" There was no Distance Scale Rule printed on the map, save the chilly numbers 1:250,000. Ok that's 1 bit on the map = 250,000 bits on the ground right? So how far is it between here and there...

Testimonials

My travel in North India was an experience that has affected my approach to life. I know this because my wife of 40 years tells me so. I went on a 26 day motorcycle ride from Delhi ...to the Nubra desert and across to Srinagar. We crossed passes at about 18,000 to 19,000 feet. Here I experienced altitude sickness, though it seems this is nothing to do with age or fitness or heath of the sufferer. My guide was Peter Francon.
