Piers and Cass LZK 2008
Our Bullets lined up Ready for The Off. Manali August 2008. Number 5 in the foreground has ridden this route many times. Tea stop on the far side of Rhotang La. Nice black-top on this section approaching Baralachla La. Photo call for the group at Baralachla La. Our Riders had travelled from Australia, Germany, the UK and India to ride the Tour with us.
We'd taken a FreeSpirit descision and headed for Pangong Tso. At the pass Chang La, snow was falling, we were all wet and cold. The other side the weather cleared and we rode on in bright warm sunshine. Summiting Khardung La all our riders were excited to be at the highest place they had ever been on earth! 18,400ft. And yes breathing there is difficult! Returning from Nubra, Piers suffered two punctures in the span of about 5 kms. Birender our mechanic quickly had the wheel off and the punctures were repaired in double quick time. This scene was captured in the Saro river valley en-route to Zanskar. Sherap stopped to talk to local children. Their school was only across the road and quickly they all ran to see us.
Cass peers over the edge of a bottomless gorge. We were waiting for the word on which route to take, the high road or the low road. I'd warned riders about Zoji La, with its falling rocks and dangerous road surface, and several Riders reported narrowly being missed by falling stones. The Zoji La Realignment Project as the road is officially known, is still the pass I fear the most. Its shale and slate composition mean it's always slipping. As we waited to speak to an approaching driver, a shepherd came round the corner with his sheep and tall mountain goats. Later that day we reached Srinagar, the ride was over. We had all reached our destination safely. This is a scene from the floating vegetable market on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir. Kashmir despite its troubles is still one of my favourite destinations in all India. Piers and Cass had come all the way from Sydney Australia to ride with us on the Ladakh Zanskar Kashmir Tour, they were excellent company and we shall remember them for a long time to come.
