I can remember promising myself around this time last year that I’d attend to the rattle on the B40 ‘…in time for Scotland…’ which I’d felt was a reasonable bit of forward planning and allowed plenty of time given that it was best part of five months away. I’d just do the local charity trial after Christmas, then out the engine would come and I’d have it apart, check over all the bits and pieces and have it together in time to do a few trials before making my annual trip to the Highlands.

I’d have to put a few miles on the bores to settle in the new rings as it was burning a bit of oil. Of course, with a lightless trials bike this could only be done during daylight and this seriously restricted my time frame. The rings steadfastly refused to bed in – though I did persist – then a chance to ride in the Jersey Two day trial meant I didn’t dare pull the bike apart, though I still felt I could do the trial and sort the rattles afterwards.
