Kathmandu Valley View Off-Road in Shivapuri Forest

A series of snaps taken on one of our Off-Road exploration tours. We rode for hours through a forest on the edge of the Kathmandu Valley. The Shivapuri Forest - a stone's throw from central Kathmandu and a key ingredient in one of FreeSpirit Adventure Tours most exciting Kathmandu Valley Off-Road Tour routes. Villages, thick forest, sandy tracks, spectacular views and hours of brilliant off-roading.

Displaced kids Tehri Gharwal Hydel Project North India 04 05

Ride the highways and byways of any Himalayan state and you'll come across some of the biggest and most spectacular engineering projects anywhere in the world. Whilst exploring solo, my routes sometimes pass by these marvellous constructions, often in remote locations.

These photos were taken on a solo ride in August 2004 - east to west across Uttaranchal and onwards. According to my map, the route would take me through a town called Tehri with my planned night stop at Chamba, some 15 kms past Tehri. I knew nothing of the Dam project. In 2005 I rode the same route to see how work had progressed on the Dam, these photos come at the end of this Album.

Heading out to the hills Dhulikel Sindhuli Highway
A ride we enjoyed earlier in 2007, riding down the Dhulikel Sindhuli Highway from Kathmandu. There had been a strike or banda and the road was virtually empty. Our intention had been to explore a different hilly route, but the lure of an open highway was too much for us, we rode south to Nepalthok. The road has been under construction since the early 1970s and but for a short section is all but complete. We discovered that the last stretch would be only a further 35kms. Look at the scenery and you'll understand the immensity of the task that lies ahead to finish the highway's construction.

Hidden Green Valleys Hidden Valley of Rice

The weather in the middle of May is just perfect for Motorcycle Touring in Nepal. It's hot in the sun and cool enough to relax in the shade. The roads are in good condition often having been repaired before the monsoon and on a saturday the traffic is always thinner. Our ride was to find the route west from the Langtang National Park to the Pritivi Highway.

Offroading in monsoon Dhap Pokhari Off-Road

This was a day ride off -road ride to Dhap Pokhari on the northern rim of Kathmandu Valley. The ride goes through beautiful forest and terraced rice field with commanding views of Kathmandu valley on your right.

The route delivers a real the thrill of Off-Roading as it follows the once-upon-a- time famous dirt road to Helambu. We ended our ride at a magnificent location at Dhap Pokhari (Dhap Lake) with beautiful open meadows where one can run like a FreeSpirit, exploring the jungle or swimming in the lake.

Rough Roads The Road to Zanskar

Discovering Zanskar by Bullet was a beautiful and inspiring ride. The long road south from Kargil was at once challenging and rewarding, all the way. Bruno and I rode the 245 kilomteres over 2 days - a stone road, broken in many places. A local bus does the journey in one day, when it's not delayed due to landslides and swollen rivers.

It was a journey that took us up a valley once inhabited by Buddhists though now more visible is the Muslim population. On earlier expeditions up the Saru valley I have discovered Buddhist statues, carved out of rockfaces, standing 5 metres high. This time we would discover many mosques, standing out as silvery landmarks across the Saru valley floor.
