Before we start the ride we do a briefing. The dangers of the highway, amongst other things. …if its narrow and you 'rea not ‘hugging the ditch’ and travelling slowly, you’ll be in DANGER. Stuff like that, you may have heard it before.
What's a Highway Mantra? “There’s a Tata round every corner, roaring towards me...There's a Tata round every corner..." And in case we forget to say it…
If you are approaching a corner and most corners are blind, "Blow Your Horn!" We'll remind you on the road. In Asia the horn says, “I am coming!” or “I am here, be careful!” or "The road is narrow, don't squash me!" And unless it's been repainted or broken by the weather, wemay well see one of Border Roads Organisation's classic SignBoards, "Expect The Unexpected!" We must always be ready for the Unexpected; two buses overtaking in your direction, no road left - a typical challenge. Don't miss the point when it comes to ‘horn blowing’. Some of the dangers that come to mind may include; rock blasting without any big red warning signs or men with red flags, if workers are drilling into rock faces, it’s a sign they will soon be blasting. Road rollers, gangs of road workers, huge rocks just where you planned to ride, cows, landslides, slipping rocks, raging rivers, no road and not least, the roaring Tata. ...that kind of briefing. |
